White Tail Deer - Odocoileus virginianus

The Science

The White-Tailed Deer, also known simply as the whitetail or Virginia deer, the most common deer species in North America. While native to North America, they can be found in Central America, Ecuador, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia. They are distinct thanks to their white underside, and when frightened, tend to stick their tale straight up, exposing the white of their tales. So, as with most animals, the name wasn't very creative, but is very fitting. As is common for most deer species, the bucks (male deer) are bigger than does (female deer). A fully grown buck can weigh anywhere from 200-300 lbs., while does will weigh from 90-200 lbs.
