Centipede in Resin - Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans
The Science:
The Centipede is a carnivorous arthropod found all around the world. It is best known for its many legs - the world “Centipede” means “hundred-footed”, but no actual species of centipede has a hundred legs. Other than one species with 48 pairs, all known centipedes have an odd number of pairs of legs. In tropical locations, Centipede species grow quite large and administer a truly unpleasant venomous bite, though they are not usually very dangerous to humans. In many parts of the world, especially in Asia, the centipede is fried or roasted and eaten as street food!
The Story:
This specimen is known as the “Chinese Red-Headed Centipede,” and is used in Folk Medicine to help heal rashes and skin diseases with its head placed on the affected area. Embedded in resin, this Centipede can be used as a unique paperweight, an educational tool or an amazing creepy-crawly conversation piece for your shelf or desk!
