Common Starfish Zoological Poster - Asterias rubens

The Science:

The Common Starfish is widespread across the coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean. Like most starfish, it has a basic five-armed radial symmetry, and has short spines across its upper surface and rows of tube feet below. It varies in color from red to brown to yellow to violet and can often be seen in rocky shallows. Feeding on a variety of other creatures including other Echinoderms, worms and molluscs. this slow-moving predator is known for using its strong arms to pry apart the valves of mussels and clams just enough to insert its stomach in the opening and digest the helpless creature inside its own shell.
