HERCULES LONGHORN BEETLE - BATOCERA HERCULES
THE SCIENCE:
Batocera hercules is a species of beetle in the Cerambycidae (longhorn beetle) family, found in Indonesia and the Philippines. Members of this species can reach between 2 and 3.4 inches in length, excluding the antennae which may reach up to 4 inches on their own. Members of this species are exceptionally adapted to their natural habitats, their bodies often mimicking the moss and bark it feeds on and lives in. This is the strongest species of longhorn beetle (hence the name), being able to lift and transport many times its own weight.
