Queen Conch Seashell

The Queen Conch (Lobatus gigas) is actually a large sea snail. In fact, it's the largest seashell in the Caribbean Sea. Anatomically, it differs from other sea snails in that it has a large foot with a sickle-shaped claw that it uses to poke into the seabed and pole-vault over anything that stands in its way.

The meat of the Queen Conch is an important part of the diet of the people of the West Indies. The shells were used by the Aztecs as a blowing horn, and the sound was a representation of the divine. The Mayans used the shells as boxing gloves during ritualistic combat during rain ceremonies.
