Rajah Brooke's Birdwing - Trogonoptera brookiana
THE SCIENCE:
Also known as the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing, Trogonoptera brookiana is a distinctive butterfly that thrives throughout the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, and various small islands west of Sumatra. The species was named in 1855 after James Brooke, the then-Rajah of Sarawak (in Borneo). It is Malaysia’s national butterfly! Males are considerably more striking than females, boasting black wings with several fang-shaped, electric-green markings on each forewing, and a more solid patch of electric-green on each hindwing. The females’ wings are brown, with markings of a much more subdued shade of green, and a few white markings near each wingtip.
