Worm lollipop - Tenebrio molitor

The Science:

The larvae of Beetles and other insects have been eaten in many cultures in many places all around the world, since they are full of protein and often not covered with a tough skin or exoskeleton. Though we are probably more familiar with feeding Mealworms to pets, they are also perfectly edible for you and me! Not worms at all, but rather the larvae of a type of Darkling Beetle, they are easy to raise, high in protein and low in fat. Although the creator of these lollipops was inspired by the Worm in a bottle of Mezcal, that Worm is actually the Larva of a moth which feeds on the Agave from which the Mezcal is made - a worm that is also eaten roasted in Mexico!

The Story:

These Worm Lollipops are made with sugar-free Maltitol and are available in four fine flavors. One of our classic items, they are an unusual way to expand your palette. Customers are often incredulous when told that the Mealworm is 100% real, and sometimes even ask us if they will die if they eat it (we like to respond that we have tried all of them and we seem to be holding up so far). The Mealworm itself has been cleaned and cooked and is perfectly fine to eat. If this doesn’t satisfy your craving for Mealworms, or you don’t have such a sweet tooth, we also offer them as a savory crunchy snack!

Great gift for kids (and fun-loving adults). Larger and better quality than others I've seen.
