OMMON GREEN BIRDWING - ORNITHOPTERA PRIAMUS
THE SCIENCE:
Ornithoptera priamus is a widespread species of birdwing butterfly found across much of Southeast Asia (particularly on many islands spanning the southwestern Pacific Ocean), as well as across much of northern Australia. This species is named after Priam, the reigning king of Troy during the Trojan War. It is a sexually dimorphic species in size and coloration. The topsides of the males’ wings are a striking combination of electric lime-green and velvety black, while their undersides are a dark bluish-green. Their abdomens are a bright yellow. Females, in contrast, are pretty much dark brown all over- and are larger than males on average.
