Jewel Beetle Earrings - Sternocera aequisignata

The Bullet Jewel Beetle, Sternocera aequisignata, is a species of wood-boring beetle that boasts an iridescent, metallic exoskeleton varying between shades of green and blue. Like many other species of its kind (within the family Buprestidae), it can be found throughout much of East and Southeast Asia. S. aequisignata can grow to be between 1.18 and 1.97 inches, a similar size range to that of many other Buprestid beetles.

It was common in some of the ancient refined cultures of Asia to attach beetlewing pieces, especially from S. aequisignata, as an adornment to paintings, textiles… and jewelry! These earrings are a beautiful statement piece- and yes, they are composed of the elytra (modified, protective forewings) of S. aequisignata. They are surprisingly lightweight, quite durable, and absolutely gorgeous- they’re among our most popular items!
