PREPONA BUTTERFLY - PREPONA LICOMEDES
THE SCIENCE
Meyer’s Butterfly, Prepona licomedes, is a species of butterfly within the Nymphalidae family found in rainforest habitats throughout much of South America including Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru. Members of this species are robust and stout, but also agile and powerful fliers. In addition to rotting fruit and sap, these butterflies also tend to feed on dung and carrion. The topsides of their wings are brown with a thick, dazzling turquoise-blue band running longitudinally down the middle of each; the undersides are simple, lighter shades of brown.
