MADAGASCAN SUNSET MOTH WING NECKLACE - UNDERSIDE - CHRYSIRIDIA RHIPHEUS

THE SCIENCE

Chrysiridia rhipheus, also known as the Madagascan sunset moth, is a moth widely considered to be one of the most visually striking lepidopteran (butterfly/moth) species in existence. As members of this species flap their wings, the hues and patterns that the human eye perceives shift, to a bit of a kaleidoscopic effect. Interestingly enough however, much of the color that the human eye perceives from the species’ wings is a result of optical interference; the wings do not actually possess pigment. As such, the wings don’t seem as colorful in subdued light. Being diurnal and so visually striking when irradiated, it has been (and still is frequently) confused for a species of butterfly. It is endemic to Madagascar and can be found throughout most of the year in most parts of the island, with peak populations between March and August.

THE STORY

This moth rivals most butterflies in brilliance and form, and is frequently sought after by collectors. These necklaces feature a genuine Madagascan sunset moth wing. The bezel is cast from genuine sterling silver, and the wing is encased between two panes of glass so that the coloration and patterning on both sides of the wing can be viewed.

    stunning

Posted by Dr. Tara B on Jul 8th 2019

took effort to find a place that carried these and where they harvest them post-mortem. They are stunning. I ordered 2 large which are supposed to be 2in (I personally have one of them which I believe is shy of 2 inches, and smaller than the one I had in the past from a different retailer), however nonetheless still absolutely stunning. I have not seen the med sized one that was a gift with the other Large one. So cannot comment on that now. I would highly recommend this merchant. The other thing is that they have the wing enveloped in glass versus epoxy. Which is my preference.
