NON-VENOMOUS SNAKE SKELETON - DINODON RUFOZONATUM

THE SCIENCE

Dinodon rufozonatum is a species of nocturnal, non-venomous snake in the family Colubridae, native to East Asia. Adults are around 28 inches long on average, but exceptional individuals have been measured at up to 51 inches. The head is long, relatively flat and, unlike many other snake species, seems to be somewhat separate from the rest of the body with a bit of a “neck” in between. This species thrives in a wide variety of habitats; it can be found near sea level, as high as 6,600ft above it, and many areas in between.

THE STORY

As with all snake species, this snake’s skeleton consists primarily of the skull, vertebrae, and ribs, with only vestigial remnants of limb bone. The skull is a complex structure with many different joints, some of which dislocate and/or expand at will to allow the snake to swallow prey far larger than its head. Dinodon rufozonatum is an aglyphous snake, i.e. one with non-specialized teeth all of similar shape and size. This genuine D. rufozonatum skeleton is finely articulated and mounted onto a polished compressed-wood base. A clear dome on top completes the casing; this specimen makes for a lovely display.
